Cool Beginners

This class is taught by:

Sarah Maloney

Sarah Maloney has been practicing yoga for 13 years and teaching for four years. She began teaching yoga at her CrossFit gym, while earning her RYT 200 certification at The Yoga Place. Sarah enjoys teaching all levels of yoga, but is drawn to leading those just entering their yoga journey, through beginner's classes.

  • My teaching style is: Traditional, relaxed, encouraging and therapeutic. I want my students to really experience and feel the poses to better understand their own bodies. I love when my students find relief through their practice and leave my class feeling rejuvenated, with a calmer state of mind.

  • My favorite yoga pose is: Crow because it is fun, challenging and beautiful all at the same time.

  • Yoga has helped me overcome:  My need to always be in control. I am more able to let go and see the fun in life!

  • My favorite music to practice to is: It really all depends on my mood, and the type of practice. I love practicing to indie, rock, some oldies, classical, and traditional chant/meditative sounds.

  • I love my: Butt! Yes, I said it, my big bubble butt. I used to be embarrassed and ashamed of it, but have learned to love my curves!

  • My favorite Deity or Goddess is: Hanuman because he is the provider of hope and courage, as well as a symbol of physical strength and perseverance to leap past your obstacles and achieve outstanding success.

  • You must try this healthy snack: There are too many to name! I love baking! I have a killer recipe for paleo sweet potato brownies, vegan gluten free brownies, and chickpea blondies. Healthy alternatives are a must for someone with a sweet tooth like me.

  • My favorite sanskirt word is: Ananda which means "bliss."

  • My advice for beginning yogis is: Don't give up! Yoga isn't about how physically flexible you are! It's about learning to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. The possibilities for your practice to grow and evolve are endless.

  • I'm most grateful for: So many things, but most importantly, my family. I've been so blessed to grow up in such a loving home with support from both my immediate and extended family.

  • The most exotic place that I've practiced yoga is:  On top of a 14,000 foot mountain after hiking for hours to reach the top.

  • If I could practice yoga with anyone, it would be: Adam Levine! He's my ultimate celebrity/yogi crush!

  • My heroes are: My parents. They have shown me it's possible to work through any of life's difficulties, and come out stronger than you were before.

  • My one wish for the world is: Positivity! If we could all just focus on the things we do have, instead of what we are lacking, we could be just a little bit happier.

Elyse Morckel

Elyse is a a recent RYT 200 graduate from Release Yoga, and is a certified Buti Yoga instructor. She also teaches dance at Dianna Durkin Dance Studio. Elyse took her first yoga class in high school, but didn't find a deeper connection to the practice till later on. For Elyse yoga is a moving meditation that keeps her mind and body refreshed. She hopes to encourage students to never stop learning and exploring all that their bodies can inform them about each time they step onto their mat.

  • My teaching style is: Always changing! I am always open to learn more from others and share that knowledge with students. I approach teaching with a light hearted attitude, as we are all learning and growing together.

  • My favorite yoga pose is: Currently, it's a tie between Triangle and Warrior III. I love the strong sense of grounding and alignment I experience in Triangle, and it also a a great time to check back in with your breath. Many people build mental blocks around Warrior III, but it allows you to break those fears down, you confront your fear/self doubt and take flight with strength and confidence!

  • Yoga has helped me overcome: Different insecurities and feelings of self doubt that I have carried for many years about myself. When I come to my mat I am reminded that I am capable of so much more than I realize!

  • I love my... because:

For along time I had insecurities with my body, but now I am finally embracing it because it's here to stay!

  • My favorite deity or god/goddess is Jesus because:
He lived his life in the service of others, always thinking of them before himself. He sought to help people not judge them for their problems, something more people should focus on.

  • You must try this healthy snack: toss popcorn with salt & pepper, lime juice and a bit of Sriracha for some heat! Or keep it simple with an apple and your choice of nut butter!

  • My favorite Sanskrit word or phrase is... because: Om Namah Shivaya - which translates to “I bow to the inner Self”. Answers and knowledge can come from within you if you look close enough.

  • My advice for beginning yogis is: Don't let yourself get caught up thinking the challenging/advanced poses are everything. Asanas are just a small part of what it means to be a yogi! Always remember your yoga journey is uniquely yours!

  • I’m most grateful for: The support of my family. They have been a lifelong source of encouragement and unconditional love, and I would not be here without them.

  • The most exotic place I’ve practiced yoga is: THE BEACH!

  • I’m ready to take my yoga to the next level because: I want to continue to open myself up to all potential happiness and joy that yoga holds for me and for those around me.

  • My heroes are: Teachers (not just from my yoga experience) who gave me the courage to believe I was more than I perceived.

  • My one wish for the world is: More love and understanding, less hate and aggression.

Greg Schumacher

  • My teaching style is: Evolving with an emphasis on safety & exploration.

  • My favorite yoga pose is: Downward Facing Dog

  • Yoga has helped me overcome: My inner “critic”. I am learning that yoga can be a path to self-acceptance which potentially is one of the most difficult paths to follow.

  • I love my feet because: It is our feet that support us every day in our physical endeavors

  • My favorite deity or god/goddess is Shiva Bhairava, the Beggar with Dogs, because: This deity represents those who have been disfranchised from society. As an educator, I advocate & work with students with disabilities. Many of these students are considered on the fringe of society, & predominately come from poverty. I have also been blessed with the companionship of dogs whose example of unconditional love continue to inspire me.

  • You must try this healthy snack: Spinach…raw, steamed, sautéed, even fried!

  • My favorite Sanskrit word or phrase is Jai because: It means victory, specifically victory to one’s Higher self.

  • My advice for beginning yogis is: Keep at it, & let it permeate your being.

  • I’m most grateful for: Those individuals in the past & present who have taught me something about myself.

  • The most exotic place I’ve practiced yoga is: I don’t know if I consider this “exotic” but it was an interesting experience: A mixed gender, all- nude yoga class in the Castro District, San Francisco, CA

  • If I could practice yoga with anyone it would be Mom because: I miss her.

  • I’m motivated to take my yoga to the next level because: I am learning that as I embrace the deeper aspects of yoga (not just asana) that life, though chaotic at times, can be more centered.

  • My heroes are: Those everyday people who help others.

  • My one wish for the world is: That everyone takes the time to get to know themselves
